McKinney-Vento

 McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program

Medora Community School Corporation is committed to ensuring educational stability and access for students experiencing homelessness, as required under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

A student may qualify for services if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes, but is not limited to, students who are:

  • Sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship
  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds
  • Living in shelters or transitional housing
  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or similar settings
  • Living with others due to loss of housing
  • Migratory children living in any of the above circumstances

Rights of Students Experiencing Homelessness

Students identified as homeless under McKinney-Vento have the right to:

  • Immediate enrollment in school, even if records normally required for enrollment are missing (such as proof of residency, immunization records, or birth certificates)
  • Remain in their school of origin, if it is in the student’s best interest
  • Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if requested
  • Access the same educational services as other students, including special education, English learner services, gifted programs, extracurricular activities, and school meals
  • Receive free school meals
  • Participate fully in school activities and programs
  • Receive assistance with school supplies and referrals to community services, when available
  •  Receive dispute resolution assistance if there is a disagreement regarding eligibility, enrollment, or school placement
